Laziness can sometimes be the greatest motivator for discovering optimal solutions. When work volume mounts and the team consists of just two people, automation and AI are not tech toys for showing off - they are a lifeline to reclaim your time.

At my company, our entire HR and Finance department consists of just two people: my manager and me. You can imagine how packed our weekly to-do list is: from cash flow forecasting and budgeting to payroll processing, periodic reporting, and resume screening.

For someone naturally inclined toward laziness like me, manually entering data row by row in Excel every day would guarantee endless overtime. Fortunately, by persistently exploring automation and AI tools over three months of trial and error, our manual workload dropped significantly. As a result, I unlocked substantial bandwidth to learn and explore new domains.

Here are three progressive tiers of automation that I implemented, which you can apply directly to your own workflows:

Tier 1: No-Code for Beginners (Zapier / Make)

Zapier is ideal when you have zero technical background but want to immediately eliminate repetitive tasks. Everything operates on intuitive drag-and-drop triggers: when a new form submission arrives, data automatically synchronizes into Google Sheets and pings a notification in Slack.

  • Strengths: Extremely accessible, connects with thousands of popular apps, and can be configured to run within 10 minutes.
  • Limitations: Monthly costs escalate rapidly with large data volumes. Great for getting started and understanding automation principles before upgrading.

Tier 2: Cost-Effective Low-Code (n8n)

When Zapier subscription costs begin ballooning, n8n offers the perfect escape. It is a fair-code platform that allows you to construct significantly more complex workflows: conditional branch logic, data iteration loops, and flexible webhook integrations.

  • Strengths: Free from proprietary licensing fees. You can host it on a small VPS server for just $5 to $10 a month to run dozens of workflows 24/7 without usage caps.
  • Limitations: Requires a modest learning curve to get comfortable with API keys, webhooks, and JSON data formats. Business and finance professionals who spend a week following tutorial videos can easily manage it independently.

Tier 3: Vibe-Coding and the AI Agent Era (Lovable, Bolt & Agentic CLI)

This represents the true quantum leap that revolutionized how I work. The term 'Vibe-coding,' popularized by Andrej Karpathy in early 2025, describes a new paradigm: communicating with AI entirely in natural language while the AI writes code and ships complete software. Instead of searching for pre-built commercial software and accepting its limitations, you can now engineer custom applications tailored precisely to your internal needs using plain natural language.

With tools like Lovable or Bolt, you simply type requirements in English: describe the desired functionality, UI layout, and connect a Supabase database. The AI generates the entire codebase, styles a clean interface, and deploys the app to the web in minutes.

Once comfortable, you can combine CLI agent tools like Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI to instruct AI to directly write code, run automated tests, and synchronize deployments.
